The Causes of Bleeding Gums in Toddlers

No parent wants to see their child bleeding due to an accident or health issue. This sentiment holds true when it comes to dental health. Toddlers can experience bleeding gums, just like adults. Regardless of someone’s age, this kind of bleeding can be a signal of a larger problem. Here’s more information about what can cause bleeding gums in toddlers.

Common Causes of Bleeding Gums

Here are a few of the different things that might trigger bleeding gums.

  • Aggressive Brushing
  • Brushing too aggressively or with a hard-bristled toothbrush can irritate the gums to the point of bleeding. That’s why we always recommend being gentle and using a soft-bristled toothbrush.

  • Dental Trauma
  • It’s also worth checking to see if your child has injured their mouth. Children often accidentally bite their own mouths or get hit in the mouth while playing with others. Toddlers also fall down a lot and the face and jaw often take the brunt of the impact.

  • Gum Disease
  • Another common cause of bleeding gums is gum disease. It can range in severity from mild gingivitis to more advanced periodontitis.

  • Serious Underlying Causes
  • While we don’t want to alarm anyone, it’s also worth noting that bleeding gums may also be a sign of more serious health concerns such as vitamin deficiency, hemophilia, or leukemia. That's a good reason not to ignore them.

How to Prevent Bleeding Gums

There are some things you can do to prevent bleeding gums from occurring in the first place. Start with proper teeth brushing techniques. If your child is too young to brush their own teeth, be sure to use the correct techniques when you brush for them. You'll also want to teach these to your child because eventually they'll be doing their own brushing. It's important to use the right tools, like a soft-bristled toothbrush with a smaller head designed specifically for children.

Children should also make visits at least twice a year to Cibolo Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics for regular teeth cleanings and an exam. We'll clean their teeth and check for gum disease, but there's more to the visit than just that. Educating our patients about the importance of their oral health is important to us. We can demonstrate proper brushing techniques and reinforce what they are learning at home.

How to Treat Bleeding Gums

If your toddler is experiencing bleeding gums, the best thing you can do is book an appointment with their dentist. Through a thorough visual examination and dental X-rays (when necessary), the dentist will be able to give you a proper diagnosis. There are many different reasons why gums may be bleeding, but we'll determine the best course of treatment for your child's specific situation.
