Many adults get at least a little nervous when they go to the dentist, but kids can really struggle to manage their feelings. When they experience severe anxiety about the dentist, it can affect how often they are willing to receive dental care. At our office, we want appointments to be as comfortable and stress-free as possible.
Who benefits from sedation dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is used in a variety of situations. If your child suffers from severe anxiety, can’t sit still in a dental chair for very long, or has other special needs, sedation allows them to get the care they need.
What kind of sedation is available?
Our office uses two kinds of sedation in the office: laughing gas and oral sedation. For complicated procedures (like multiple cavities or traumatic dental injuries), we also provide general IV medication out of the office in a hospital setting.
Laughing gas is the nickname for nitrous oxide, a sweet-smelling gas that we administer through a mask. It only takes a few minutes of breathing this gas to feel relaxed and sleepy. Your child remains conscious through the appointment. After we remove the mask, the effects wear off quickly. Most patients are good candidates for laughing gas.
Oral sedation is taken in pill form before an appointment. By the time we begin treatment, the effects have kicked in. This is a deeper form of sedation than laughing gas. However, your child still remains conscious, relaxed, and in a trance-like state. Sometimes they won't remember much about the appointment.
