Is Your Child Ready for Phase 1 Braces? Understanding Early Orthodontic Treatment
When most parents think about braces, they picture a teenager with a mouth full of brackets. But for some children, orthodontic care can begin much earlier. Phase 1 treatment, also called early or interceptive orthodontics, is designed to address certain problems while a child’s jaw is still growing.
Starting at the right time can make a big difference. At Cibolo Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, children can receive both pediatric dental care and orthodontic treatment under one roof. Our team includes Dr. Abdullah Asser Mohammed, a board-certified orthodontist who graduated from Riyadh Elm University, and board-certified pediatric dentists including Dr. Lauren Digioia, who earned her dental degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio and her pediatric dentistry certificate from the University of Florida, and Dr. Joanna Ayala, a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
Here’s what Cibolo parents should know about Phase 1 treatment and how to tell whether your child might benefit.
What Is Phase 1 Orthodontic Treatment?
Phase 1 treatment is early orthodontic care that usually takes place while a child still has a mix of baby teeth and permanent teeth, often between the ages of about 6 and 10.
Instead of focusing on perfectly straight teeth, Phase 1 treatment focuses on guiding jaw growth and correcting problems that could become more difficult to treat later. It’s typically followed by a resting period, and some children may need a second phase of treatment, such as braces or aligners, once more permanent teeth come in.
Why Early Treatment Can Matter
A child’s jaw is still growing and developing, which gives orthodontists an opportunity to guide that growth. Early treatment may help:
- Correct Bite Problems: Such as crossbites, underbites, and open bites.
- Guide Jaw Growth: Encourage the upper and lower jaws to develop in better balance.
- Create Space for Permanent Teeth: Reduce crowding by making room for incoming teeth.
- Protect Protruding Teeth: Front teeth that stick out are more prone to injury.
- Address Harmful Habits: Such as thumb sucking or tongue thrusting that affect tooth position.
- Reduce Future Treatment: In some cases, early treatment may make later treatment simpler or shorter.
Early treatment isn’t necessary for every child. Many orthodontic problems are best treated later, once all permanent teeth have come in.
When Should Your Child Have an Orthodontic Evaluation?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by around age 7. By then, most children have a mix of baby and permanent teeth, and an orthodontist can spot developing problems early.
An early evaluation doesn’t always mean early treatment. In many cases, the orthodontist will simply monitor growth and recommend the best time to begin care.
Signs Your Child May Benefit From Early Treatment
Watch for these signs that your child may need an orthodontic evaluation:
- Early or Late Loss of Baby Teeth: Losing teeth much earlier or later than expected.
- Difficulty Chewing or Biting: Trouble eating certain foods.
- Mouth Breathing: Breathing through the mouth most of the time.
- Crowded or Misplaced Teeth: Teeth that overlap or appear out of position.
- Jaws That Shift or Make Sounds: Clicking or shifting when opening and closing.
- Biting the Cheek or Roof of the Mouth: Frequent accidental bites.
- Teeth That Don’t Meet: Upper and lower teeth that don’t come together properly.
- Thumb Sucking After Age 5: Prolonged habits can affect tooth and jaw development.
Common Phase 1 Treatment Options
Every child’s treatment plan is unique. Common approaches in early orthodontic care include:
- Palatal Expanders: Widen the upper jaw to correct crossbites and create space.
- Partial Braces: Brackets on select teeth to correct specific problems.
- Space Maintainers: Hold space for permanent teeth when baby teeth are lost early.
- Habit Appliances: Help children stop thumb sucking or tongue thrusting.
- Removable Appliances: Guide teeth and jaw growth.
Not every option is right for every child. Your child’s orthodontist will explain which approach is recommended and what to expect.
What Happens After Phase 1?
After Phase 1 treatment, there’s typically a resting period while the remaining permanent teeth come in. During this time, the orthodontist will monitor your child’s growth and development.
Some children may need a second phase of treatment, often with braces or Invisalign, to fine-tune the position of their permanent teeth. Others may need little or no additional treatment. Retainers, including options like FOREVERSMILE, may be recommended to help maintain results.
The Benefit of Dental and Orthodontic Care Together
At Cibolo Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, pediatric dentists and an orthodontist work together in one office. That means your child’s dental health and orthodontic progress can be monitored as a team, and families can often coordinate appointments more easily.
