Dental Emergencies--What Parents Need to Know

Emergencies happen when you least expect, which is why it's so important to have some type of game plan. You never want to feel completely helpless when your child needs you the most. By following these tips, you can be prepared no matter when or where a dental emergency arises!

1. Create an On-the-Go & At-Home Dental Emergency Kit

Having an emergency kit is one of the best ways to be prepared no matter what emergency arises. In addition to the general items that come in an emergency kit, we also recommend adding some tooth-specific items. These include clean gauze, a small container, aspirin, sterile gloves, Orajel, salt, and hydrogen peroxide!

2. Keep Our Phone Number in Multiple Spots

When a dental emergency happens, you don't know where you will be. Make sure you have Cibolo Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics' phone number in your cell phone contacts, on the refrigerator for yourself or babysitters, and in other family members' phones. The sooner you can get your child into our office once a dental injury takes place, the more likely you are to minimize the chances of any lasting damage.

3. Protect Your Child's Smile During Physical Activity

Sports are one of the leading causes of dental injuries. If your child is playing sports, we recommend having them fitted for a custom athletic mouthguard. Mouthguards are designed to absorb impact which can help protect your child's teeth and jaw if a ball or an elbow comes their way.

4. Know What Constitutes a Dental Emergency

It's important to have an understanding of which types of dental emergencies require immediate attention. Some of the most common dental emergencies that require urgent treatment are:

  • Abscessed Teeth
  • Broken Teeth
  • Chipped or Cracked Teeth
  • Knocked-Out Teeth
  • Severe Tooth Pain
